SONGWRITERS & COMPOSERS

Songwriters write lyrics and/or music for artists while Composers write music for commercials, soundtracks, jingles, themes, musicals, plays and video games.



Sold on Song
BBC2 provides a unique resource for the appreciation of songs and the art and craft of songwriting ...There is also a library with over 20,000 artists' biography and discography as well as information on your favorite song. Sold on Song launched last summer its first competition to find an undiscovered songwriting talent. The panel of judges included Guy Chambers, Beverley Knight, Robin Gibb, Janice Long and Graham Gouldman.

Unisong
Song contest created by songwriters for songwriters is currently opened for entry. Categories include Pop Ballad, Rock, acoustic folk, world music/reggae, gospel, contemporary christian, social/political (any style), pop uptempo, country, urban/R&B, children, instrumental/jazz & lyrics only.
Grand Prize winner will win a songwriting trip, sponsored by Music Bridges ATW, to either New York, Nashville, Los Angeles or London for a guaranteed collaboration with an established writer/artist e.g. Brenda Russell, Jennifer Paige, Randy Bachman, Lindy Robbins, Michael Jay, Marsha Allayment.

Songwriting Contest
Song contest is now closed for entry. Categories include pop, rock/indie, dance, jazz/blues, folk/country, christian/gospel/faith, R&B/hip-hop/rap, lyrics only, instrumental and miscellaneous.
2004 prizes included publishing deal offers, TAXI.com memberships, software from Sibelius and Virtual Studio Systems, music books from Backbeat Books, Guild of International Songwriters and Composers memberships, discount vouchers, and more...with a total value of over £25,000.

Sligo Festival Composition
Composers from UK and Ireland of any age may submit unperformed and unpublished works of no more than ten minutes duration. Instrumentation must include three, four or five of the following instruments: flute, B flat clarinet, piano, violin, cello.
3 winning works will be workshopped and performed on 3 April 2005 and the prize of 1,000 Euro will go to the composer of the work a jury deems to be the best.The entry fee is €15. For entry contact aoifeflynn@modelart.ie

Masterprize
Masterprize encourages classical music enthusiasts to listen more to new music and to help new composers to find a larger audience.
The Competition is for symphony orchestra which, based on the composer’s metronomic or tempo marking, will normally have a duration of between 6 and 15 minutes. Masterprize may however, at its absolute discretion, accept entries which fall very marginally outside these time limits.
Works should be scored for normal symphonic forces with a maximum of 90 and a minimum of 50 players.
The final will take place in October 2006. The 5 final works will be performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Harding, at the Barbican Centre, London (date tba) in the presence of a live audience and the Final Jury made up of a panel of distinguished musicians.
